The 4000 strong members of staff of the Lagos Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) will this afternoon embark on a protest march to their head office, Alausa, Ikeja Lagos over poor conditions of service.
All through the weekend, union leaders were busy mobilizing their colleagues to wear their “tattered LIRS ties, scarf and faded LIRS T-shirts for the protest.
For over a year ,the staffs have been grumbling over their conditions of service which they claimed is going from bad to worse. They complained of internal politics by the management which favours only cronies of the chairman. They also complained that most of the incentives put in place by their former Chairman, Mr Babatunde Fowler, now Chairman ,Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) had been withdrawn or limited to the senior management cadre while the junior ones wallow in abject penury. They further said that only the senior management cadre enjoys more than N500,000:00 transportation and mobilization allowance while the stipend paid to junior workers has become irregular. All these complaints according to their posting on social media, were tabled before the Chairman, Mr Ayo Subair, who did not pay attention to it.
The Human Resources Director, Arinola Kola -Daisi had immediately issued a query to the union leader which was replied immediately. Olaonipekun is to face a disciplinary committee at 12noon today. The immediate cause of the protest was the disciplinary action scheduled to be imposed on LIRS union chairman, Mr Ishmael Takwallahi Olaonipekun on Monday (today)for rejecting a birthday cake given to him on his birthday on March 6,2018. Mr Olaonipekun was alleged to have taken the cake back to the office of the chairman, Mr Subair in rejection .
Former Chairman, Mr Fowler made it a policy to give birthday cakes to all staffs as an incentive to make staff more productive and to all staff as members of the same LIRS family. However, when Mr Subair got to office, the policy was reviewed and limited to Senior Revenue Officers to management level. It effectively removed Assistant Revenue Officers to other junior offices from benefiting from the birthday cake policy.
All efforts to get management to change the policy to what it was before proved abortive. This was the reason behind the rejection of the cake by the union leader.
Below are some of the mobilization statements of staffs on their social media platforms at the weekend :
“Good evening LIRS colleagues, it’s with sadness that We, the LIRS union give this present update.
On 6th March, the Union chairman, Comrade Taqwa returned the LIRS birth day cake to the Executive Chairman of LIRS Mr SUBAIR because his conscience & that of the entire union exco could not take the marginalization/victimisation of colleagues on TRS to SRS cadre for birthday celebration.
“He was issued a query because of this (see copy) and he responded (see copy) and also banned from coming to 5th floor LIRS. Further, efforts were made by State ASCSN chairman & secretary to see Mr SUBAIR and make him understand the reasons behind this were rebuffed by Mr SUBAIR & mgt.
“Then the union chairman was issued a summon on 9th March 2018 to appear before Disciplinary committee on 12th March 2018 by 12noon for gross misconduct. One wonders when returning of a privileged item becomes gross misconduct.
“We are aware of remarks particularly in HQ by staff who believe they are close to mgt and are mgt spies amongst staff – today is here, tomorrow is known by none.
“We have also contacted the State Exco of ASCSN and they are aghast by this unfriendly behaviour and victimization by LIRS mgt.
At this point, your prayers to the Most High, support and comradeship is vital to ensure LIRS is positioned positively for staff. Please your presence on 5th floor HQ premises is key on Monday 12th March 2018 with the tie & scarves given for 7years+
Pls be ready with their white and spoilt ties for Monday”
The issue at hand is beyond cake. This is a call to press further and harder or numerous rights and privileges from the unfriendly and inhuman management of Lirs.
Enough is enough!
We are saying no to victimisation of LIRS staffs
