Former Plateau State governor Jonah Jang has declared his intention to contest for the post of the President Federal Republic of Nigeria in the 2019 General election under the platform of People’s Democratic Party of Nigeria PDP
Jang who is currently the senator representing Plateau North at the Senate, said his ambition is borne out of the desire to serve Nigeria – He said he would entrench good governance through transparency in governance, respect for rules of law and ensure that justice prevails at all times.
New Telegraph reports that Jang who is the first aspirant from the Middle Belt Zone to declare for the presidency, said his ambition is borne out of the desire to serve Nigeria, having the capacity to bring unity and peace if given the opportunity.
Amongst his friends present at the venue while making his declaration in a meeting of Plateau state elders on Wednesday, August 8, at WAYE foundation in Jos including former top government functionaries who served under him when he held sway as executive governor, serving legislators both at the state and national Assembly and well-wishers said having consulted widely across the nation, he has received overwhelming acceptability to contest for the presidency in 2019. He said: “Security, economic development and human capital development, Nigerian unity would be key Priority in his administration if elected as the president of this country.” He said he would entrench good governance through transparency in governance, respect for rules of law and ensure justice prevails at all times. Senator Jang promised not to disappoint the good people of Plateau state, Middle Belt and Nigeria if elected president as he would work towards uniting the country. It would be recalled that a member Representing Barkin Ladi/Riyom constituency in the federal House of Representatives, Istifanus Dung Gyang had earlier declared his intention to take over from Senator Jang in the red chambers. The former governor, however, disclosed that the Senate seat in 2019 is now vacant and it is left for people of Plateau North to decide who should represent them in the red chamber.
It was gathered that apart from Istifanus Dung Gyang who had officially declared and submitted his letter of intention at the PDP state secretariat to contest for Plateau North senatorial seat, others who are nursing ambition include: Edward Pwajok (SAN), Secretary to the Plateau state Government, Rufus Bature, former chief of staff during Jang’s administration, Da Francis Bot and the former speaker of the Plateau state House of Assembly, Isa Chungwom Song among others. It has previously reported that the Middle Belt Forum shortlisted four presidential aspirants from the region to be presented to other regions ahead of the 2019 presidential elections. Those shortlisted are a frontline businessman, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, former minister of information, Professor Jerry Gana, former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Dr. Obadiah Mailafia, and former Plateau state governor, Senator Jonah Jang.
