The selection of the Oba for Okeigbo Kingdom started at exactly 9 :00am prompt on the 12th of April, at the well decorated Palace hall, Okeigbo as men of the Nigerian police command from both Okeigbo and Area Command Ondo, the Civil Defence Corps, Vigilante groups, SS from Akure, OPC members, Great Ife groups from Ile ife, and Nigeria Army officers were on ground to provide security.
Thirteen out of Fourteen kingmakers and warrant chiefs were in attendance for the normal selections. Also present was the two contestants to the throne in person of Chief Olu Babajide and Chief Odefadehan both from Aare ruling house, Ookeigbo.High Chief Owolade from Kuole Oloje ruling house was however absent.
Others in attendance include people from Okeigbo and Ifetedo communities in Nigeria. The chief Immam of Okeigbo, Ifetedo, CAN chairman of Okeigbo, the traditionalists, Herbalist, and other chiefs from Ile ife – oduduwa witnessed the occasion. The Ile Oluj/Okeigbo local government chairman in the person of Hon Akinsuroju, supervisors, DLGA and other government officials from the state chieftaincy affairs were also on ground to witness the epoch making event.
In his welcome address, the moderator, Dr Adeboye acknowledged the significance of the days’ event and as well, the traditional leader, Chief Folagbade Ogunjimi the Egbeji of Okeigbo Kingdom used the opportunity to appeal to all quarters to embrace peace. He said the issue of ruling houses or quarters should not be a problem for the community.
While further explaining that Okeigbo has lost many things in term of infrastructures and physical projects because of obaship tussle, he called for support for the community and warned trouble makers to caution themselves and let the peace reign.
At the end of the voting exercise, Chief Olu Babajide had twelve votes while Chief Odefadehan had none as a result of one void vote thus, Chief Olu Babajide was announced the winner and as the newly elected Oluoke of Okeigbo Kingdom.
In his remark, Chief Engineer Oye Elusiyan pleaded for peace to rein while also calling for transparency and honesty in the new dispensation.
In his acceptance, the newly elected Oluoke elect, His Royal Majest, Oba Lawrence Olu Babajide, IKUGBAYIGBE III, appreciated everybody for their cooperations.
While promising to carry everybody along in his government, he also appreciated Chief Odefadehan for his cooperation.
