CURROPT PRACTICES IN PORTS: ANLCA INAUGURATES ZONAL TASK FORCE. BY JOY ENAMUNA

The Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA ) has inaugurated a Zonal Task Force committee that will assist her members to address shady practices going on in the Ports.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the committee members Dr Kayode Farinto, the Vice President of the association said the task force committee should not relent in their efforts in addressing the challenges facing Customs brokers

According to Farinto, “ the coordinators should restructure and be rotating these appointed officers so that they can be working 24hours because most of the problems usually occoure at night.

“Issue of Zonal task force is long overdue, we may be coming late but we are going to meet up with whatever is on ground”

He added that the task force is not ‘composed to confront any government agencies but to solve the problems of our members’

At the occasion which was chaired by Dr John Ofobike Zonal Co-ordinator West, of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA), said the purpose of the Zonal task force is to mediate and report every irregularities to the appropriate quarters.

Stating that most of the corrupt practices going on is not known by the management, and we want to put a stop to it, because this act is killing our busines and the masses end up paying for it which ends in hike in prices of goods.’

Ofobike said ‘we have road blocks everywhere, from Apapa port to Area B’ there are two customs checkpoints mounted with their Hilux, causing serious traffic gridlock to movements of cars and cargoes.

He added that, ‘ these check point s often times and opening of containers on the road leads to criminals taking the advantage to hijack containers, we get these reports so many times, with the treat of taking you to ikeja if you don’t play the ball as demanded.

This task force is to expose agents, corrupt officers and overzealous security agents. It is not an avenue to attacking anybody or causing violence. He said

He urged members of the committee to do their work diligently, without compromise, which is the essence of having a Zonal task force, in order to have checks and balances.

Adding, ‘ there should be transparency, any one caught should be appropriately dealt with.
