Addressing newsmen at the command, the Customs Area Controller, Mr Mohammed Garba said that the whole seizures were made because his officers and men are living up to thier statutory responsibilities in suppression of smuggling, blocking all revenue leakage and enhancing trade facilitation towards sustaining best international standards

Comptroller Garba told newsmen that the Command also realized the sum of N28.8million as underpayment from importers during the past one month.
He further explained that importers who did not pay correct duties were compelled to pay the appropriate duties when they were caught, adding that this was the best way to handle non-compliant traders and those who feel they can escape from paying the right amount.

“As for non-compliant traders who do not conform to import rules, whenever we have such information, we cross check and if we discover that the Federal Government money is not fully pay we would make sure we collect them

“For compliant traders, there is what we call Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) . If they have been profiling your work and you have been compliant, they will give you such facility like Fast Track to enable trade facilitation.
“But for non compliant traders, this is where they end. We will continue to punish them and Federal Government money will be collected.”he said

Comptroller Garba revealed that smugglers have taking another means of smuggling goods and his officers are already aware of the new mode of concealing smuggled products.

He added that the smugglers now use various means to conceal goods,in the case of using Nigerian brewery crates of drinks to conceal foreign parboiled rice. Another was where spare parts were used to conceal used tyres and also drawing book to conceal used shoes

He advised the smugglers to invest their money on legitimate business so as to avoid loses as his command is set to make the zone uncomfortable for smugglers
