The Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, has sworn in the tenth substantive Chief Judge of Ondo State, Honourable Justice Oluwatoyin Olanrewaju Akeredolu.

At the historic event held at the Cocoa Conference Hall of the Governor’s Office in Akure, Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu urged the new Chief Judge to work towards ensuring fairness, equity and total independence of the judiciary for continued peace and tranquility in the state. 

He said equity always sought to mitigate the hardship presented by strict observance of the law, while the law hung on a delicate balance supported and sustained by equity.

The governor added that modern democratic governance stands on the tripod of the independence of, Executive, Legislative and Judiciary which essentially are the function of the law.

“A strict adherence to its precepts propels a society to a state of peaceful coexistence which, in turn, engenders prosperity,” he said.

Arakunrin Akeredolu who described the new Chief Judge as a personality who is dutiful, diligent, resourceful, principled and humane had served as Acting Chief Judge having been sworn-in, on 24th July, 2017 at the time the predecessor who was also then on acting capacity was due for retirement.

“We have benefited from focused and exemplary leadership within a short period. Judicial activities, under his lordship’s leadership, have been anchored on equitable considerations,” he said.

The State Governor who highlighted some of the impactful strides of the new Chief Judge when on acting capacity to include; decongestion of prisons occasioned by official visits to all prison formations in Ondo State on 29th September to 3rd October 2017 and 6th February 2018 respectively.

Others are the promulgation of Practice Direction to fast tract matters relating to mortgage and housing matters; designation of a High Court to FastTrack the prosecution of EFCC/ICPC cases. 

He also commended her for the regularisation of appointment of Magistrates and appointment of new Magistrates as well as creation of the Family Division of the High Court to deal with Family and Child Rights Matters. 

In her response, the  new Chief Judge, Justice Oluwatoyin O. Akeredolu promised that the judiciary, under her leadership, will be a place of integrity, honesty, fairness and efficient dispensation of quick justice. 

While assuring that there would be demonstrated example to situate all the attributes, she crave the cooperation of her colleagues and staff of the Ondo State judiciary in their quest to build a strong judiciary. 

“I must thank all my colleagues and all staff of the Ondo State Judiciary for their show of understanding and support thus far. 

“Going forward, I urge that the work ahead should be perceived as a common assignment. Your suggestions and initiatives will be added advantage.

“Where corrections have to be made, advice would be deeply relished. We will ensure that nobody is left behind and every necessity will be attended to. 

“We know it well, I none of us acting alone can achieve success. We must therefore act together as a united people, for national reconciliation, for nation building, for the birth of a new World.

Justice Akeredolu who lauded the people of the state for the confidence reposed in the judiciary, stated categorically that the trust would not be betrayed.

“Never, never and never again shall it be that this beautiful land will again experience the oppression of one by another and suffer the indignity of being the skunk of the World. Let freedom reign”, she submitted.

Dignitaries from the bar and bench across Ondo State, the judiciary within the neighbouring states of Ogun, Oyo, Osun,Kogi and royal fathers joined the family members of the new Chief Judge at the event.
