The Wife of Ondo State Governor, Mrs Betty Akeredolu has distributed food items to 3000 widows and vulnerable people in the Central senatorial district of the state to ease the burden of widows and cushion the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Speaking during the event, the governor’s wife, called on wealthy individuals in the society to support orphans, widows and vulnerable people in the society.
“This kind gesture i am sure will go a long way in assisting the widows and vulnerable to have a sense of belonging considering the harsh financial condition of our people,”she said.
The governor’s wife, represented by Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on Gender, Research and Documentation, Mrs Temitope Daniyan, said the program was officially launched in Akure South Local Government of the state to commemorate the year 2020 International Widow’s Day.
She described widows as one of the most vulnerable and needed care in the society, as most of them suffer so much neglect after their husband’s death.
The first lady stressed that a website, www.ondowidows.com was launched in May, where widows across the 18 LG areas of the state can register and fill in their datas, to enable government reach out to them for support and further capture them in its policies and programmes.
“So far, more than 8,000 widows have registered through the website and process has been so smoothly without any problem.
“We have given food stuffs and cash support to over 3000 widows in the 6 local government areas of the senatorial district, which included: Akure South, Akure North, Idanre, Ifedore, Ondo East and Ondo West.
“The present administration under Gov. Rotimi Akeredolu is committed to impact meaningfully in the lives of widows and
assured of government continuous support through the office of the First Lady and Women Affairs ministry.
“The programme continues tomorrow, Wednesday with visit to Southern Senatorial District, which also has six local government areas,”she said.
The News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN) reports that the local government areas under the Southern senatorial district are: Ilaje, Okitipupa, Ese-Odo, Odigbo, Irele and Ile-oluji/Oke-igbo.
NAN further reports that day and date for the visit to Ondo North Senatorial district, comprising of Ondo North west, North east, South west, South east, Owo and Ose local governments will be fix immediately they finish up with southern district.
Responding on behalf of other beneficiaries, a widow, Mrs Janet Akinsuroju, thanked the state government and particularly the governor’s wife for the program.
“This is the first time in the history of the state that widows across the state will benefit from the state government assistance and we appreciate them for remembering us at this period of the lockdown,”she said.
The Ondo widow’s care was an initiative of Mrs Betty Akeredolu to enable them have a sense of belonging in the government of Gov. Rotimi Akeredolu and avoid the chain of middlemen.
NAN also reports that the pack of each palliative contains food stuffs like 15kg of rice, garri, groundnut oil, spaghetti, among others, while stipend was also transferred into the individual account filled in the form on the website for their upkeep. (NAN)
