Combined efforts of men of the Ondo State Police Command, the Mayetti Allah and Vigilante Group have led to the arrest of one Ismail Wakeel, who is a member of a six man kidnapping gang.
The gang, police said had been terrorising travellers along Akunnu-Ikakumo- Auga axis of Akoko north east local government area of the State causing panic to travellers and residents of the area.
The suspect, who was arrested after kidnapping a motorist, was paraded at the headquarters of the Ondo State Police Command with weapons recovered from their operational base and claimed six kidnappers were those terrorising the Akunnu axis.
The victim from Edo State was travelling in his Mercedes Benz car marked EDO Benin 203 PW on Akunnu -Auga Road before the suspect and other members of his gang accosted and marched him to their den in the bush.
The victim, Prince Omoba Ibahiagbon, who was also at the police headquarters, said the kidnappers also collected about N70,000 inside his car.
He said the kidnappers had started negotiating for ransom before he was rescued.
Narrating how the man was arrested, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the command, Mr Femi Joseph, said the suspect was arrested after he escaped from their hideout when the police, the Myetti Allah and the vigilante group swooped on them.
Joseph said the victim vehicle was abandoned on the road which arose the curiosity of the police who later made a call to confirm that the owner of the vehicle had been kidnapped.
The PPRO said the DPO of the area later led members of the Myetti Allah and the Vigilante Group to the den of the kidnappers and engaged them in gun duel.
He said while the kidnappers fled in different directions with some injuries, they were able to rescue the victim unhurt.
Joseph said Wakeel also escaped with bullet wounds but was arrested with the help of the police at Ibilo in Edo State.
The PPRO said the man, who also confessed and narrated how the operation was carried out was already assisting the police in their investigation.
Joseph gave the assurance that the other members of the gang would be arrested soon.
In another development, we were informed that a- 40 year old cattle dealer Fatai Amuda was reportedly abducted between Akunnu and Ikakumo by suspected gunmen believed to be herdsmen.
The Akala of Ikaram, where the man hailed from, Oba Andrew’ Momodu reported the case to Ikare Akoko Area Commander, Rauf Razak.
The Area Commander assured the monarch that police will comb the bush and rescue the victim.
