The Ondo State Governor Oluwatotimi Akeredolu on Sunday evening declared that his convey confronted suspected kidnappers on Akure-Ilesa-Ibadan road, saying they however ran into the bush when his security men opened fire.
The governor who admitted that he saw some of the kidnappers terrorising travelers on the road recently while going to Ibadan from Akure, said there would be an end to the menace soon.
Speaking on a live TV/Radio Programme on Sunday tagged, “An Evening With Mr Governor”, Akeredolu noted that only those with security men in their conveys such as governor and deputy were now sure of safety on the nation’s roads.
“My convey was almost attacked but my security men shot to the air to scare them (kidnappers) to the bush. It is a serious problem on Akure-Ibadan road. We as governors will do something about the issue with the federal government”.
Akeredolu affirmed that, “It looks like it’s only the masses that are affected as the big men are enjoying themselves as they drive in convoy. Is that so? Only two people can drive in the state with convoy governor and deputy governor. I have encountered them before so security issue is not limited to the masses alone”,
“It is real that lives of travellers are not save on the road.”
When asked if he is afraid of being kidnapped, the governor jokingly said “I have passed that level, nobody can kidnap me again”.
“The increase in IGR has not placed undue burden on the good people of Ondo state, we have not increased tax. The only difference is that we have trained personnel who have ensured accountability and proper collection of these funds in all local governments across the state” – Gov Rotimi Akeredolu
“When we came on board, Ondo state generate N700M as IGR and with this it can’t get us to anywhere, that is why we have to put all hands on deck to generate N1.5B for this year and we are still working hard on how to generate N2B in the subsequent years” – Gov Rotimi Akeredolu
